Medium and Low Secure Hospitals
Our Secure Hospitals provide medium and low secure services for patients detained under the Mental Health Act. All our secure hospitals have an on-site multi-disciplinary team, including full-time consultant psychiatrists, consultant clinical psychologists, registered nurses, social workers, teachers and other clinical support staff. Our clinicians are employed directly by Care Principles and include internationally-recognised specialists in their fields.
The hospitals are purpose designed and built units that have been created to maintain a spacious and pleasant therapeutic environment for our patients. Accommodation is in discrete 7, 8 or 9-bed bungalows or houses designed to help patients develop independent and group living skills, with communal recreational and leisure areas, garden and horticultural facilities and extensive supported learning resources on site.
The Medium Secure Service accepts male patients who require a high level of physical security in addition to enhanced relational and procedural security. Services are available for men with learning disabilities, personality disorders (without learning disabilities) and Asperger syndrome, in separate specialist units. Overall, the main aim of therapeutic activity and care on the medium secure units is to enable patients to be transferred, at the appropriate time, to lower levels of security.
Our Therapeutically Enhanced Secure Services are for men and women with a preliminary diagnosis of learning disability and are delivered in low secure facilities that provide a high level of relational and procedural security within a safe and supportive environment. Specialised services are offered in group and individual formats, and specific therapies and rehabilitation interventions are designed to help patients progress through to the next stage of their care pathway.
Our Women’s Enhanced Secure Service provides a gender-sensitive service for women with a primary diagnosis of learning disability. This service addresses the issues surrounding challenging behaviour as well as offering therapy and rehabilitation to help prepare the women to move into less restrictive environments within the community.
We also provide secure extended care services for patients with learning disabilities who have received all treatments and interventions within mainstream medium or low secure facilities and have been assessed as requiring ongoing or extended secure care in order to ensure the continued promotion of their mental health and well-being.
