Community hospitals

Locked and open hospitals

The care and treatment offered in our locked and open community hospitals can support both informal patients and those who have been detained under the Mental Health Act.

With a multi-disciplinary team of consultant psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and nurses, with good access to community resources, these units provide a safe, homely environment for people with a wide spectrum of learning disability or mental health problems.

Here, our service users can grow emotionally and develop a range of skills and social abilities, helping to increase their levels of confidence as they move further along their care pathway. Our community hospitals provide an excellent step-down service, gently integrating individuals back into a less restrictive, community environment.

Our community hospitals are generally suitable for men or women aged 18 – 65 with:

  • A learning disability and/or other mental disorder
  • A mental disorder with impaired cognitive/social functioning plus challenging behaviour
  • A forensic history
  • Complex needs that are not being met in their current placement, for example low security units or community-based placements
